James Corden details Sam Gange's failed audition for Lord of the Rings

James Corden revealed he auditioned to play Sam Wise Gange in the Lord of the Rings trilogy, and while it didn't go well, he did get two callbacks.

Late-night host James Corden opens up about his experience as Samwise Gange, who failed to audition for the part of the Lord of the Rings movie. Based on J.R.R. Tolkien's fantasy novel of the same name, the Lord of the Rings trilogy began in 2001 with The Lord of the Rings. Considered one of the greatest franchises of all time, the films are currently the 12th highest-grossing film franchise in the U.S. All Day. The success of the "Lord of the Rings" franchise saw Tolkien's novel "The Hobbit" adapted into a three-part series, and Prime Video's spinoff "The Ring of Power" recently premiered to rave reviews.

In an interview with the Happy Sad Confused podcast, Corden details his audition for Samwise Gamgee in Lord of the Rings, which didn't go well. Corden said "everyone in London" was auditioning for the film at the time, trying to play the faithful hobbit. Check out Corden's story below:

“Every single person in London auditioned for ‘Lord of the Rings.’ Everybody. I auditioned for Samwise. I was doing it! The accent and everything! ‘Mr Frodo!' Two of my other friends went in, and we all got called back the next day, and then we got called back the next day. And then none of us got called back after that!”

What's Next for the Lord of the Rings Franchise

Sean Austin will eventually play Samwise Gange, a role he has received high praise for. Lord of the Rings fans comment on Corden's audition, Many said they were thankful he didn't get the role. Casting for The Lord of the Rings was an intensive process, with many major characters considered, especially the role of Gandalf. While Ian McKellan will play, other actors under consideration include Christopher Plummer, Sean Connery and Patrick Stewart.

Although the original Lord of the Rings film was released two decades ago, the franchise is bigger than ever. Production has begun on Ring of Thrones season 2, with the series set to hit theaters in 2024 at the earliest. In June 2021, it was announced that an animated film would be added to the series, titled The Lord of the Rings: The War of the Rothschilds. Set to hit theaters on April 12, 2024, the film takes place 250 years before the events of Lord of the Rings.

Since The Lord of the Rings has always been a landmark property, it's no surprise that many actors wanted to try their hand at roles in the trilogy. However, with the fantasy franchise continuing to release new TV shows and movies, there are still plenty of opportunities Actors join in. While some fans were relieved that Corden didn't get the part of Sam, it's still possible the late-night host could appear in another project's Lord of the Rings series.
